Aim:

We aimed to evaluate the success of cervical cerclage application during pregnancy.

Materials and Methods:

The data of 32 patients who were admitted to our gynecology and obstetrics clinic between 2007-2018 and diagnosed as cervical insufficiency and underwent cerclage procedure were retrospectively reviewed. Age, gravida, parity, gestational weeks, cervical patency, and previous pregnancy histories were recorded. The patients were divided into two groups as primary cerclage and therapeutic cerclage. The comparison of the groups was done by Student t test in normal distributed data, Mann Whitney test in normal non-distributed numerical data, and chi-square test in categorical data. P <0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results:

The mean gestational week was smaller in the patient group who underwent primary cerclage than the mean gestational week of the therapeutic cerclage group. (P <0.001). The time from the cerclage to the delivery of the patients undergoing primary cerclage was significantly greater than the time from the therapeutic cerclage to the delivery of the patients undergoing therapeutic cerclage. (P <0.001) Pregnancy of 3 of the pregnants who had primary cerclage ended 32 weeks before, and all pregnancies who had therapeutic cerclage ended their pregnancies before 32 weeks.

Conclusion:

Primary cerclage application is more successful in continuation of pregnancy than therapeutic cerclage application.
